Objectives of the training module include:

  1. explaining the fundamentals of climate change science;

  2. understanding the concept of global warming;

  3. describing the expected consequences of climate change and the role of adaptation;

  4. suggesting investments in adaptation measures;

  5. explaining the climate change mitigation measures;

  6. understanding EU Strategy and legislation;

  7. suggesting ways to reduce the household and community vulnerability to climate change;

  8. showing good practices of climate change adaptation solutions.

Training  module
will:

  • Refer to key concepts of the climate change and its effects;

  • Explore the options for increasing the EU’s climate ambition for 2030 and 2050;

Glossary

  • Carpooling: car ride sharing by more than one person going to the same destination

  • Circular economy: economic system based on the principles of designing out waste and pollution, keeping products and materials in use, and regenerating natural systems.

  • Ecological footprint: represents the maximum limit of consumption per person according to Earth’s ecological capacity.

  • Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the United Nations body for assessing the science related to climate change.

  • Paris Agreement is a legally binding international treaty on climate change.

  • Sustainable development: a development that avoids the depletion of natural resources, in order to keep an ecological balance that doesn’t allow the quality of life of modern societies to decrease. It focuses on a long-term vision.

  • Adaptation: actions to reduce vulnerability to climate change.

Case Study 1:

Adapting to climate change: Five countries set an example

 Smart Climate Change Adaptation in Practice, The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and development (OECD).

Key words: climate change, adaptation, solutions.

Summary: countries preparation for climate change, e.g. creation of new green spaces in Copenhagen (Denmark), green roofs in Toronto (Canada), reduction in electricity, changes in the residents’ behavior in Sydney (Australia), stadium-on-stilts in Yokohama City (Japan), forest preservation in Mexico.

Case Study 2:

Adapting to climate change in Eastern and Southern Africa

International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), The Climate Change and  Development Project (CCDP).

Key words: climate change, adaptation, Africa, development project, climate change impacts, crops

Summary: Millions of African residents have already started dealing with the climate change effects on agriculture, water availability and biodiversity. CCDP is a pilot project aiming at establishing  policies and strategies in adapting to climate change in the region.

Case Study 3:

Climate change – living on water

DW Documentary

Key words: climate change, adaptation, floating home, water architecture, sea level

Summary: Sea level is rising fast and many cities will have to deal with flooding while people will lose their properties. New pilot projects, visionaries, floating and underwater buildings can suggest different life style but also an adaptive way of living due to climate change.
