The Library of the University of Athens began its reorganization and modernization in October 1991, where five years later, with the utilization of the EPEAEK programs of the 1st and 2nd Community Support Framework (CSF), it was transformed into a library of modern requirements, with a large number of users and perhaps the most massive and lively space of the entire University. It was if not the first, but certainly one of the first university libraries in the Greek area that, by gathering its material (books and journals) from various study centers and individual libraries, implements the international standard for the creation of a Central University Library with concentration and full control of its material and services.
