University Research Institutes (URI)
University Research Institutes (URI) are concerned with research in a specific area of science or technology. URIs operate within the framework of one or more Departments of the same or other Universities and may collaborate with public or private sector bodies and with scientific associations and societies at home or abroad.
Three IRIs are in operation at Panteion University. These are the Institute of Regional Development (I.P.A.), the Institute of Urban Environment and Human Resources (I.A.P.A.D.) and the Institute of International Relations (I.D.I.S.).
The Institute of Regional Development was founded in 1975 on the initiative of Professor Ieronymos Pintos. In 1992 it was automatically transformed into a Research University Institute. It is affiliated with the Department of Economic and Regional Development of Panteion University and is housed in a privately owned building. The main purpose of the I.R.D. is the promotion of scientific research in all areas of the development process. This purpose is achieved through the interconnection of urban, local and regional development issues with broader national and European processes as well as through the regular exchange of ideas and experience on an international basis. The Institute is also involved in the development of theoretical research to address contemporary development issues.
The Institute of Urban Environment and Human Resources was founded in 1995 on the initiative of the Department of Economic and Regional Development of Panteion University and began operating in 1999. IAPAD is the result of the evolution of the Geographic Information Systems Laboratory, which was founded in 1989 by the then Department of Urban and Regional Development of Panteion University. The Institute's areas of development activity are: policies for the urban environment, spatial planning - urban development and human resources, the economic dimensions of the urban environment, sustainable cities, the real estate market, the economics of the environment and natural resources, the issue of environmentally sustainable economic development, the management of water resources and the impacts of climate change.
The Institute of International Relations was founded in 1989 on the initiative of Professor Dimitris Konstas. It belongs organically to Panteion University and is affiliated with the Department of International and European Studies, maintaining broad administrative and financial autonomy. The Institute's objectives, among others, are the study of Greek foreign policy issues and the preparation of proposals for its formulation and implementation, the analysis of international processes and developments that refer to the country's economic strategies and cultural relations or are directly or indirectly linked to the defense of its interests, the study of internal factors and processes (NGOs, interest groups, etc.) that influence the formation of foreign policy, the study of issues of the Greek Diaspora, the examination and monitoring of Greece's bilateral and multilateral relations with countries that are of major political, economic and strategic importance to Greek interests, the consideration of the European unification project and the promotion of the science of international relations.
